How I work

I believe that the therapeutic relationship is central to the healing process in therapy.  I endeavor to create a warm, calm, compassionate and non-judgmental environment to work in.  Not to say that it won't, at times, be challenging but this will always be handled with empathy, compassion and respect.

I undertook my core training with the Northern Guild of Psychotherapy which has an excellent reputation in the profession delivering courses accredited with UKCP and BACP.

Counselling is definitely not "one size fits all".  My professional training is based around "integrative practice".   The beauty and strength of this approach is its adaptability as the treatment methods are blended uniquely for each client.  Informed by a fundamental understanding of the different personality types, I may select elements from the following therapeutic modalities in my work with you:

Transactional Analysis

Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)

Mindfulness

Guided Imagery & Metaphor Therapy

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)

With a Person Centred approach

Psychological developmental theories including Transactional Analysis are amazing for coming to understand yourself and why you experience your life as you do - how we bring the past into the present and how this shapes our future.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a World Health Organisation  & N.I.C.E. recommended treatment for trauma including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).   Actually EMDR is also used to treat phobias, OCD, panic and anxiety disorder and body dysmorphic disorder.  When integrated into a fuller therapeutic program, EMDR can be of great benefit in working with adverse childhood experiences and trauma.

When appropriate, I am keen to offer mindfulness, breathing and imagery work as part of therapy.  Therapeutically, I find mindfulness techniques particularly effective when working with anxiety, panic, emotional difficulties and even pain management.  Mindfulness practice can also be something that a client can continue long after ending therapy increasing autonomy, empowerment and ongoing well-being.

By the way, if you are new to all of this then please be assured that you need absolutely no prior understanding to gain all the benefits of therapy.
